UNLOC and industry partner Xtera exchange visits

3 February, 2016

UNLOC researchers exchanged visits with experts from industry partner Xtera to explore new venues for collaboration.

n late January, members of the UNLOC project welcomed Dr. Steve Desbruslais from our industry partner Xtera Communications Ltd for a day of presentations and exciting discussions. The day started with Dr. Desbruslais presenting latest progress at Xtera in the push for development of high-bandwidth, high-capacity optical subsystems for long-haul submarine network infrastructure. Following his presentation, he met members of the UNLOC transmission group for a series of technical discussions aimed at exploring venue for joint collaboration and exchange of expertise, particularly in the area of optical amplifiers. Following Dr. Desbruslais visit, a number of UNLOC researchers and PhD students spent a day at Xtera’s office in Romford, UK. They met with several members of the Xtera team and were given a tour of the state-of-the-art telecom facilities. This exchange of visits revealed several opportunities for future collaboration in the design and testing of high bandwidth optical amplifiers and further meetings are planned to shape it into a more concrete joint project.

Xtera is a valued industry partner in the UNLOC programme having contributed a total of £100 000 in the form of EPSRC industrial CASE studentships and access for UNLOC researcher to Xtera’s lab facilities.
